Where to Learn Whitewater Kayaking in India
Rishikesh, Kerala or Kullu: which season each runs, how they compare, and what a kayaking certificate actually means.
Updated

India has a few good places to learn whitewater kayaking. The biggest difference between them is the season, because each one follows a different monsoon. That means you can learn in India in almost any month.
The main options
| Where | River | Season | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rishikesh, Uttarakhand | Ganga | Mid-September to June | Beginners to Class III; the most schools and the easiest to reach |
| Kerala (around Kodenchery) | Monsoon-fed rivers of the Western Ghats | June to October | Learning while the Himalayan rivers are closed |
| Kullu–Manali, Himachal | Beas | Check with the institute | Institute courses; colder, faster water |
| Tamil Nadu coast | Sea | Varies | Sea kayaking rather than whitewater |
Why Rishikesh is the usual first choice
- The longest season: about nine months a year.
- The right water for learning: calm practice areas sit close to Grade II rapids, with Grade III a short drive away, so you can move up without changing rivers.
- Easy to reach: a short drive from Dehradun airport and Haridwar station, with cheap places to stay in Tapovan.
- Lots of schools to choose from, at around ₹3,000–₹3,500 a day. See our price guide.
Kerala and Kullu
Kerala runs whitewater courses during the monsoon, from June to October, which is exactly when Rishikesh is closed. GoodWave Adventures in Kodenchery is the best-known school there. Kullu is home to the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (ABVIMAS), whose water sports centre lists rafting and intermediate kayaking courses.
Do kayaking courses give a certificate?
Most do, but it helps to know what kind:
- A certificate of completion from the school. This is what you get at the end of our 4-day and 7-day courses. It records the course and the level you reached, which is useful when you join guided river days or an expedition.
- Instructor qualifications are a separate thing. Our instructors hold WPA / BCU certifications. That's what tells you a school is properly qualified to teach.
- Institute courses, such as those at ABVIMAS, follow their own syllabus and certificates. Check directly with the institute.
Our suggestion
If you can travel between October and May, start in Rishikesh. If you only have time during the monsoon, look at Kerala.
